Indonesia is rich with nature, not to mention a variety of flora and fauna that exist in almost every island.
Lorentz National Park area is one of the most extensive protected areas in Southeast Asia (25,000 km2). With a territory covering Jayawijaya, Mimika Puncak Jaya and Asmat. National parks, including the World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO has a supply of minerals and large scale mining operations are active.
There is also the Lorentz National Park conservation project of community initiatives for communal and ecological heritage conservation in the region. Since 2003 until now, WWF Indonesia is conducting mapping indigenous areas in the Lorentz National Park area. 2003-2006 years WWF has mapped the District Kurima, Yahukimo and mapping was carried out in 2006-2007 in the District Sawaerma, Asmat regency.
Lorentz National Park is representative of the complete ecosystem for biodiversity in South East Asia and the Pacific. There are 630 species of birds which constitutes 70 percent of the bird in Papua and 123 species of mammals.
